“(Ragtime) was a nice place where I could feel comfortable and unique.” “I found myself loving the structure of classical music and also the freedom and ear learning of jazz, but didn’t really feel I wanted to be confined by either of them,” said, DeGhetaldi, 30, who has a YouTube channel devoted to ragtime and stride piano. It is a key evolutionary step toward the development of American jazz in the 1920s. Ragtime is a specific genre of American music that had its heyday in the first two decades of the 20th century, a blend of polyrhythmic African American folk music of the 19th century and the more European-flavored marches of composers like John Philip Sousa. “I know all these musicians,” said DeGhetaldi, “and I saw how this sort of thing was done elsewhere, so I figured I could do this here in my hometown.” The festival is attracting ragtime performers and fans from all over the country and is the brainchild of Santa Cruz born-and-raised pianist Kylan DeGhetaldi, who has performed at similar festivals around the country. The festival is big and ambitious – taking place over the course of two days, Saturday and Sunday, with several musical performances, along with seminars on ragtime and even a ragtime dancing demonstration, all at venues around town. The first ever Santa Cruz Ragtime Festival aspires to turn downtown Santa Cruz into something like a simulacrum of the early 20th century. But this weekend in Santa Cruz, it may sound a bit more like it. I am thankful to be a part of the Eastside neighborhood.Generally, 2016 doesn’t look or feel much like 1916. Thank you to the City of Santa Cruz employees who shared their insights of what our city is about time well spent covering topics of interest to mostly everyone and the opportunity to meet the very employees who help make decisions for us every day. ‘City Hall To You’ event a neighborhood success There’s a long waiting list of children looking for adult mentor friends. Please consider becoming a BBBS volunteer. It’s the friendliest auto shop I’ve ever experienced and I appreciate their generosity. This locally owned family business was founded by longtime BBBS volunteer, Jack Sparks. Unexpected icing on the cake was being offered a free oil change donated by DMV Clinic, in appreciation for my volunteering. I greatly appreciate the opportunities BBBS provides for adult “Bigs” to be matched with “Littles” in need of extra support and love in life. It’s the most gratifying volunteer experience I have ever had. Thanks to this wonderful non-profit organization I became a volunteer mentor for a delightful middle school girl at the beginning of this year. I want to thank Big Brothers, Big Sisters and DMV Clinic auto shop. Thank you Big Brothers Big Sisters and DMV Clinic Carolyn and Curt Coleman, Senderos Board members We are so lucky to have this treasure in our community with its doors open to all of us! Senderos is proud to be a partner with the MAH in bringing the rich Mexican culture and performing arts to Santa Cruz. They clearly saw, as we do, the MAH’s commitment to cultural bridging and celebrating diversity everyday. One of the reasons the Kinsey family knew they wanted to bring their exhibit to the MAH was that all of the signage in the museum is bilingual English/Spanish. The recent opening of the renowned The Kinsey African American Art & History Collection Exhibition at the MAH is just the most recent example of how the museum is a leader of Santa Cruz’s spectacular cultural and artistic community. ![]() The Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History is a finalist for the National Medal Award, one of the highest honors given to museums in the U.S. ![]() This event is destined to be a fixture on the Santa Cruz musical scene for many years to come. ![]() If you missed it, don’t let that happen again. How about a big round of applause for Kylan DeGhetaldi’s Santa Cruz Ragtime Festival of last weekend? I attended a festival two years ago that was in it’s 16th year, and it was nothing compared to what Kylan brought to Santa Cruz. ![]() Ragtime Fest destine to be a fixture in Santa Cruz The entire BroPrints organization deserves huge accolades for their support of our AVID program and the entire Santa Cruz Community. Moreover, Aaron even presented the shirt-making process to my students as a guest speaker. Aaron created the perfect shirt to represent our program on field trips to universities and trade schools. Aaron worked with the class to make their T-Shirt design turn into reality. The 8th grade AVID class at San Lorenzo Valley Middle School sends a sincere thank you to Aaron Clark and his business, BroPrints. BroPrints helped make student designs a reality
